The Principal’s Guide to “March Madness”

The calendar has flipped to March, we have ‘sprung forward’, and schools across the nation are gearing up for what’s affectionately known as “March Madness.” While this term typically conjures up images of basketball tournaments, for educators, it brings to mind a different kind of frenzy. With all the standardized testing, spring fever, and high levels of anticipation for upcoming breaks, March can present unique challenges for principals striving to maintain order and focus in their schools.

So, how can school leaders navigate this period of heightened energy and distraction? Here are twelve strategies to help principals manage “March Madness” effectively. Why twelve? Well, if you follow March Madness basketball or play the brackets, you know a 12 seed always finds a way to upset a 5 seed.

1. Set Clear Expectations: Remind students, teachers, and staff of behavioral expectations during this busy period. Reinforce the importance of staying focused on academics and maintaining a positive learning environment.

2. Plan Engaging Activities: Incorporate engaging and interactive activities into the curriculum to keep students motivated and excited about learning. Consider integrating themed lessons or projects related to springtime events or holidays.

3. Emphasize Prioritization: Help students understand the importance of staying focused on their academic goals, even amidst the distractions of springtime events. Encourage teachers to prioritize essential curriculum content and assessments.

4. Offer Support and Resources: Provide teachers with resources and support to help them keep students engaged and on track. This could include lesson plans, classroom management strategies, or additional training opportunities.

5. Celebrate Achievements: Recognize and celebrate academic achievements and milestones throughout the month. Positive reinforcement can help maintain motivation and focus during this busy time.

6. Encourage and Model Healthy Habits: Emphasize the importance of maintaining healthy habits, such as regular exercise, proper nutrition, and sufficient sleep. These habits can help students and staff manage stress and stay focused on their goals.

7. Promote Stress Management Techniques: Teach students and staff stress management techniques, such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness, or time management strategies. Encourage them to take breaks when needed and seek support if feeling overwhelmed.

8. Maintain Consistency: Consistency is crucial in times of heightened excitement. Stick to established routines and procedures to provide stability and predictability for students and staff.

9. Communicate Effectively: Keep lines of communication open with students, teachers, and parents. Address any concerns or challenges promptly and work collaboratively to find solutions.

10. Lead by Example: As a principal, model the behavior you wish to see in others. Stay positive, focused, and composed, even during hectic times. Your leadership sets the tone for the entire school community.

11. Prepare for Testing: If standardized testing occurs during March, ensure that students and staff are adequately prepared. Provide support and resources to help students feel confident and prepared for success.

12. Lean into Community: Encourage a sense of camaraderie and teamwork among students and staff. Plan community-building activities or events to strengthen bonds and promote a supportive school culture.

Bonus: here is one more that is absolutely essential…Ramp Up Your Visibility: you students and staff need to see you and your leadership team as often as possible. Do this with walkthroughs, drive-by recognition, and with your presence in the halls, commons, and doors of the school.

There are no guarantees in life, but by implementing these strategies, principals can more effectively manage “March Madness” in their schools and maintain a positive and productive learning environment. Remember, with clear expectations, consistency, and support, schools can navigate this busy period with success.
